Bursa Silk

Bursa, one of the most vital stops on the historic Silk Road in Anatolia, has been synonymous with silk and sericulture for centuries. The city’s identity is woven with the legacy of the silk caravans that carried the renown of "Green Bursa" to the far corners of the world.

A History Woven Over Centuries

The history of silkworm breeding—the foundation of sericulture—dates back to antiquity. Towards the end of the Byzantine era, Bursa emerged as a primary center for silk production. However, its true golden age began after the Ottoman conquest during the reign of Orhan Bey. By the 14th and 15th centuries, Bursa’s silk industry had become a cornerstone of the Ottoman economy.

In 1888, the Silkworm Research Institute was established in the city to refine mulberry cultivation and silkworm egg production. This facility, featuring extensive nurseries, solidified Bursa’s scientific leadership in the field.

Modern Revival and Geographical Indication

Today, the prestige of Bursa silk is officially protected through a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). This certification ensures that the "Bursa Silk" label is only given to products that meet the traditional, high-quality standards unique to this region. Currently, this precious fiber is meticulously transformed into exquisite final products at the Umurbey Silk Production and Design Center, keeping the centuries-old tradition alive with modern artistic touches.

The Heart of the Trade: Koza Khan

For those seeking to experience this heritage firsthand, the most iconic destination is Koza Khan. Built in 1491 by Sultan Bayezid II, this architectural masterpiece served as the ultimate marketplace for silk cocoons. With its magnificent stone masonry, two-story structure, and peaceful courtyard, Koza Khan remains the legendary heart of the silk trade. Here, visitors can still find authentic Bursa silk offered for sale in a setting that breathes history.
