Gezek is a vibrant cultural tradition and a reflection of Ottoman musical heritage in today’s social life. Common across Anatolia but deeply rooted in Bursa, Gezek can be defined as a "mobile musical gathering." It brings together amateur musicians from diverse professions and backgrounds who meet weekly at the home of a different member to perform classical Turkish music following a specific program and order.
The Traditions of the Gezek Community
In Bursa, this tradition is kept alive by five prominent groups: Bursa Friends Gezek, Green Bursa Lovers Gezek, Green Bursa Friends Gezek, Tahtakale Gezek, and Silk Road Gezek. While membership consists of men from all walks of life, the process of joining is governed by long-standing customs:
The Symbolism of the Gezek Lantern
A distinctive feature of these gatherings is the "Gezek Feneri"—a colorful lantern hung on the balcony or window of the host's house. This lantern serves two purposes: it helps members find the meeting location easily and sends a poetic message to neighbors and passers-by: "The friends of music are meeting here tonight."
While meetings traditionally take place in private homes, special occasions may call for "External Gezek Meetings," where the community performs in public or cultural venues to share their passion for music with a wider audience.
